In preclinical research, some of the most important insights are generated long before a study reaches its final conclusions. As Envol Biomedical continues to expand its toxicology, pharmacology, and GLP capabilities, the company is strengthening this critical component of its research infrastructure with the addition of Matheus Moraes as Clinical Pathology Laboratory Manager.
Moraes brings more than five years of clinical laboratory experience spanning hospital healthcare, government outpatient settings, and contract research organizations. His background includes clinical chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microscopy, urinalysis, body fluid analysis, cell counts, immunoassays, and other laboratory disciplines. Before joining Envol, he also spent more than two years working within a CRO environment, giving him experience applying clinical laboratory science specifically to preclinical research.
For Envol customers, however, the importance of Moraes’ addition extends beyond his résumé. His role reflects a deliberate effort to build a clinical pathology laboratory around dedicated clinical pathology expertise, with the people, processes, capacity, and communication needed to support increasingly complex studies.
Envol is Focused on the Everyday Story of a Study
Envol’s Clinical Pathology Laboratory supports routine testing across disciplines including hematology, coagulation, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis. The team is also responsible for processing samples and maintaining their biological integrity when they are prepared for shipment to sponsors. Envol is expanding those capabilities further, including the integration of hematology microscopy capabilities that will allow the laboratory to perform cell differentials and use microscopy to confirm hematology results.
For Moraes, the significance of clinical pathology is straightforward: it provides a continuing view into what is happening throughout a study.
“Clinical pathology opens the lens into what’s going on every day with the animals,” Moraes explained. “It’s essentially a daily direct report on how that drug or therapy is impacting the animal’s organism.”
Those measurements can provide important insight into areas such as hemostasis, liver function, kidney function, and other physiological responses. Rather than looking only at endpoints, researchers can build a longitudinal picture of how an animal is responding throughout the study. That everyday data becomes part of the foundation upon which later preclinical conclusions are built.
This makes clinical pathology much more than a supporting laboratory function. It is an integral part of generating the high-quality data sponsors need to understand the safety and biological effects of their programs.
Building a Clinical Pathology Team Around Clinical Pathology Experts
One of Moraes’ priorities is to ensure that Envol’s laboratory is built differently from clinical pathology operations he has encountered elsewhere.
At Envol, clinical pathology is supported by a lean team of full-time technicians dedicated specifically to the discipline. Moraes believes that specialization matters. In some CRO environments, clinical pathology can become integrated into broader laboratory operations, with responsibilities shared among personnel whose primary backgrounds may be in other analytical disciplines. Envol’s approach is to put clinical pathology expertise directly at the center of the laboratory.
That dedicated structure gives the team the opportunity to continually strengthen procedures, training, workflows, and laboratory-specific expertise rather than dividing attention among unrelated functions.
Moraes’ own responsibilities include oversight of day-to-day laboratory operations, development of standard operating procedures, implementation of training programs, and continued improvement of laboratory processes.
The laboratory itself is growing alongside those capabilities. Envol is preparing to relocate the Clinical Pathology Laboratory into a larger space designed to accommodate greater workloads, and the department has expanded to five full-time technicians.
Together, those investments position the laboratory to support Envol’s continued growth while maintaining the specialized attention that complex preclinical programs require.
Supporting Envol’s Expansion in GLP Toxicology
The importance of that specialization becomes even greater as Envol expands its GLP toxicology capabilities.
Clinical pathology generates data that can directly contribute to the interpretation of a preclinical study, making accuracy, traceability, retrievability, and regulatory compliance essential. Moraes sees his team’s depth of clinical laboratory experience as an important part of ensuring that Envol can meet those expectations as its regulatory programs grow.
Because the laboratory generates study data, Moraes emphasized that adherence to GLP standards must be built into its processes. The objective is to ensure that clinical pathology data is accurate, traceable, retrievable, and compliant so sponsors can have confidence in the information supporting their programs.
For sponsors, this means Envol’s expansion into more complex regulatory studies is being supported not only through broader toxicology capabilities, but through investment in the underlying laboratory infrastructure and expertise required to generate dependable study data.

Technical capability is only one part of what Moraes wants Envol customers to experience.
A major advantage of Envol’s structure is the ability of its clinical pathology team to work closely with study directors. That proximity creates a direct line between sponsor needs, study leadership, and the laboratory personnel generating and evaluating the data.
For Moraes, better communication can translate directly into better execution.
Because the team is relatively lean and focused specifically on clinical pathology, information can move quickly. Questions can be addressed sooner. Potential problems can be identified earlier. Processes can be adjusted when appropriate, and the laboratory can remain closely aligned with what study directors and sponsors need from the program.
“This efficiency in communication creates a lot of opportunities to catch problems early on, to make our processes more efficient, to get things right the first time, and to keep the standards high,” Moraes said.
That philosophy fits closely with Envol’s broader approach to preclinical research: scientific expertise matters, but so does accessibility. Sponsors benefit when the scientists conducting their work are connected to one another and available to collaborate as a program evolves.

Moraes joined Envol at a pivotal point in both his career and the company’s growth. After completing his four-year degree, he was ready to move into laboratory management and was attracted to the opportunity to build processes, lead a specialized team, and remain within the challenging environment of research.
He was also drawn to the larger purpose of the work. Research, he noted, brings talented people together to pursue novel solutions, creating an environment where scientific expertise can ultimately contribute to new therapies and better outcomes.
Now, he has the opportunity to shape what Envol’s Clinical Pathology Laboratory becomes as the organization continues to grow.
When asked what he wants sponsors to associate with the laboratory a year or two from now, Moraes’ answer was concise: reliability, ease of access, and flexibility.
